How Ongoing Work Stress Impacts Your Mental Health

If you’re a first responder, medical professional, or someone who’s constantly giving to others in your job, you’ve likely felt the weight of stress and emotional exhaustion. But what happens when that stress starts to impact you more deeply than just feeling tired or overwhelmed? You might be experiencing secondary trauma.

What Is Secondary Trauma?

Secondary trauma, also known as vicarious trauma, occurs when you’re exposed to the traumatic experiences of others over time. It doesn’t happen overnight; rather, it builds gradually as you continually witness or hear about the suffering of others. The more you’re exposed to trauma—whether it’s through direct interaction with clients or coworkers, or the ongoing stress and responsibility of your role—the more your own emotional and mental well-being can begin to erode.

This is especially common in high-stress, emotionally demanding fields like emergency response, healthcare, and social work, where professionals are not only managing their own emotions but also holding the emotional weight of others’ trauma. Even if you’re not experiencing the trauma firsthand, it’s still possible for it to impact your mental health.

How Does Secondary Trauma Present?

Secondary trauma manifests differently in everyone, but some common signs include:

* Emotional exhaustion: Feeling drained, emotionally numb, or disconnected from others.
* Intrusive thoughts: Reliving the trauma or having distressing thoughts about clients’ suffering.
* Hypervigilance: Being on edge, easily startled, or constantly feeling like you’re “on alert.”
* Avoidance behaviors: Shying away from certain situations, conversations, or even people that remind you of the trauma.
* Physical symptoms: Experiencing tension, headaches, or trouble sleeping.
* Cynicism or detachment: Developing a negative view of people or losing faith in the work you do.

These are just a few of the ways secondary trauma can show up in your life. It can leave you feeling emotionally spent, disconnected, and even question why you’re in this line of work.

Why It Won’t Go Away on Its Own

Unlike the occasional stressful workday or a tough shift, secondary trauma doesn’t simply fade with time. It doesn’t go away just because you keep pushing through. If left unaddressed, secondary trauma can lead to burnout, depression, anxiety, and even physical health problems.

In many cases, professionals don’t realize they are carrying the weight of others’ trauma until the effects start to interfere with their personal lives, relationships, and overall well-being. The longer it’s ignored, the harder it can be to overcome on your own.

How I Can Help: Using EMDR and Body-Based Techniques to Heal

The good news is that secondary trauma can be healed. Through targeted therapy, it’s possible to process and release the accumulated emotional and physical stress that has built up over time.

One of the most effective tools I use to help professionals like you heal is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR works by reprocessing the trauma stored in the brain and body, helping to reduce its emotional charge and shift how you relate to the memories of those difficult experiences. It’s proven to be incredibly effective in treating trauma and secondary trauma, helping you break free from its grip.

In addition to EMDR, I also incorporate other body-based techniques to address the physical aspects of trauma. Trauma isn’t just a mental or emotional experience; it’s stored in the body, too. Through somatic therapies, breathwork, and mindfulness practices, we can help your body release the tension, anxiety, and physical discomfort that often accompany secondary trauma.

You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone

If you’re a caregiver or helper who’s been carrying the weight of others’ trauma, I want you to know you’re not alone. Secondary trauma is a real and valid experience, and it doesn’t have to define your life or career. By addressing the trauma through EMDR and body-based healing techniques, you can begin to reclaim your energy, clarity, and passion for the work you do.
